Working in the Engineering Team

Damon Sibley

Name: Damon Sibley
Job title: Senior EICA Engineer
Interests/hobbies: Computers/Video Games/Gadgets/Cars/Walking
How long have you been at Limejump? 18 months

What does your role involve?

As Senior EICA Engineer, I am responsible for the management and delivery of control system integrations and electrical design for Limejump optimised flexibility sites. My role is to understand the operational requirements of the asset which include programmable logic controls (PLCs), industrial communication protocols, industrial networks and IoT. This involves a lot of management and programming with, at times, bespoke programs.

What is a typical day like in your role at Limejump?

A typical day at Limejump for me could involve a wide range of activities, no two days are ever the same. I cover numerous customer sites, so each day could involve anything from testing system installations to urgent fault finding. I also do a lot of office-based work collaborating with colleagues across the business and within my team. Together we working on new standard programming modules for our PLC, producing documentation for projects/testings and creating assembly and electrical drawings.

What are the challenges, if any?

Prior to Limejump, I had never worked directly in the energy/clean tech sector, so I knew it was going to be an exciting, but potentially challenging task for me. Luckily, the team I have around me soon got me trained up and confidently delivering on behalf of both Limejump and our customers. As I spend a lot of time on-site and away from the office a big concern I had was getting to know the wider Limejump team. The social aspect as well as great communication initiatives such as lunch and learns, coffee roulette and company events mean I have met a lot of wonderful people. It isn’t going to be easy to power the UK with 100% renewable energy but it’s a journey that I’m proud to be part of.

What do you like most about working at Limejump?

The work-life balance and flexibility are definitely up there, and of course the people, my fellow Limejumpers are crucial to creating a great place to work. From the leadership team to our apprentices, everyone is friendly, hard-working, passionate and all share the same vision and values. We have something special going on here at Limejump and I am proud to be part of it.

What factors helped you decide to pursue a role at Limejump?

Limejump offers, in my opinion, a top-tier package, with truly inspiring and very useful benefits. I love the innovation card (money to spend on education/upskilling) and that we get innovation days to complete our own personal learning. This is the only company I have worked at that understands the benefits of developing the skills of the team. The work-life balance (home/office hybrid approach) not only enables me to reduce my driving time and therefore may impact the planet but also enables me to spend more time with my family. I must also add that during the interview it was clear from the outset that the people were passionate and very friendly and had a very clear understanding of the company’s strategy and objectives, which excited me.

What is the most interesting or exciting thing you have learned?

Within just my first few weeks I began to truly understand how key renewable energy is for the future of the UK, but also how intermittent it is, therefore how crucial new low carbon technologies such as batteries are in order for the UK’s energy system to become net-zero by 2050. It was also really interesting to learn how volatile the commodity markets, such as gas and carbon, are and how wider events such as geopolitics can have such a huge impact on power prices.

What advice would you give to somebody considering a role at Limejump?

Limejump is very passionate about being sustainable and has a friendly, knowledgeable and supportive team. You can have a genuine influence on our technology and operations, whatever your role. Innovation and passion are encouraged from the top down, and being given freedom within your role is such an empowering gift. The green energy market is continually evolving and growing and Limejump is at the forefront of the movement.
